Making effective use of micropolitics & power in organisations

Challenges and trends

Micropolitics and politically motivated actions cannot be avoided in organisations, no matter what your position is.

Does that means that you need to fight fire with fire or fight harder and faster than others?

The answer is “no”. Instead, it is more about constructive politically-motivated actions. This requires an understanding of the political environment of colleagues, superiors and the organization as a whole. It also requires working towards achieving a set of common goals and acting for the benefit of the whole organization.

In the context of growingly flat hierarchies and the necessity of interlinking cross-functional collaborations within the organization it is important not to ignore the issue of power and micro-politics but to develop a healthy and robust attitude around this topic, so that collaboration capabilities are not buried.

With interdependence present in most organizations one has to say farewell to the fantasy of wanting to decide and control everything or trying to use micropolitics to create an environment according to one’s own ideas. Instead, it is more about seeing micro-politics as a way to enhance mutual benefits through the use and development of opportunities for action.
